This year’s Zilker Summer Musical is a lesser-known show called All Shook Up. This show features Elvis Presley music, lots of dancing, and even some motorcycle riding. The plot is loosely based on a Shakespeare play, Twelfth Night, and includes misunderstandings, a disguise, and unrequited love.
I don’t usually write about restaurant openings, but I can’t resist telling everyone that the new Cookbook Bar & Cafe is now open in the Austin Central Library!
Looking for some interesting ways to escape the Austin summer heat? I recommend these three thought-provoking exhibitions which focus on immigrants, refugees, and minorities.
All ages will enjoy visiting the Woodland Faerie Trail at the Zilker Botanical Garden. This shaded pathway features over 40 miniature habitats especially designed for those fanciful, but shy, creatures. The Trail can be visited now through August 10, during Zilker Garden’s regular hours from 9 AM to 6 PM. There are also two special “Moonlight” evenings on July 20 and 21.
After a rainy July 4th afternoon, skies were still cloudy around 8 PM when Bill and I walked over to watch the H-E-B Austin Symphony July 4th Concert and Fireworks. We brought our raincoats just in case.
I recently attended one of the two performances of Mass: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers at The Long Center. This musical theater work was composed by Leonard Bernstein. Peter Bay, conductor of the Austin Symphony Orchestra, was the driving force behind this ambitious production in honor of the centenial anniversary of Bernstein’s birth.
Along with many other cities around the country, a Families Belong Together Rally was held in Austin on June 30th. Our local rally took place on the south steps of the Texas State Capitol. The event was organized by the Children’s Defense Fund-Texas and sponsored by over 50 organizations, ranging from the Texas State Teacher’s Organization to Catholic Charities of Central Texas to the Sierra Club.

Austin City Hall is now hosting The People’s Gallery for 2018. Pieces by local artists are featured throughout the building, even in the stairwells. Visitors can vote for their top three favorites through October 26. Next year the City will purchase the winning artwork—the People’s Choice—to add to their permanent collection. The exhibition can be viewed through January 1, 2019 during regular City Hall business hours.
