After the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on same-sex marriage, over 300 gay and straight couples obtained marriage licenses at the Travis Country Courthouse on Friday. Several churches offered their services for wedding ceremonies. Fourth Street was closed on Friday evening for a rally and celebration. And rainbow flags were prominently displayed all around downtown…

Election Night: 2014

Polls for the mid-term elections just closed here at 7 PM CST this evening. It will be quite interesting to see who wins the local races for Austin mayor and City Council seats. Outside of Austin, Texas is a “red” (Republican) state, so those state-wide contests are most likely to be won by Republicans.

Park(ing) Day

You probably know that today, September 19th, is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. But did you realize that this is also PARK(ing) Day? According to the organization’s website, “PARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists, designers and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks.” In keeping with our city’s hipster reputation, a few “parklets” popped up on Congress Avenue today.

This morning the Austin Fire Department held their annual 9/11 Ceremony at the Buford Tower near our building. About 100 people attended. Members of the Austin Fire Department Pipe and Drum Corps played during the ceremony. Congressman Lloyd Doggett spoke, along with Austin City Council member, Mike Martinez. Both praised the ongoing work of the local fire departments in battling the recent wildfires here.
