Downtown streets were closed on Labor Day morning for the 10th annual TriRock Austin. This triathlon attracted about 1400 competitors, many from Austin and the surrounding communities. The event started at 7 AM, and roads remained closed until around noon.
The annual Austin Pride Parade took over downtown on Saturday evening. With the colorful floats, energetic participants, lively music, and twinkling lights, this is definitely the best parade in Austin.
Although this isn’t the correct season yet, we’ve already had an Austin Fall Home & Garden Show here. Bill and I decided to visit the show on Friday to avoid the weekend crowds. This was not the best plan. The Austin Convention Center was nearly empty, so we were accosted by numerous salespeople with offers to remodel our non-existent house. Most of the exhibitors seemed to ignore the word fall in their displays, which brought back fond summer vacation memories for me…
During August, everyone wants to leave Central Texas for good reason: it’s just too doggone hot. Like many other Austinites, I went out of town for much of the month. When I left in early August, daytime highs were around 100°F. So I was very glad to return home last week to much cooler, rainy weather.
Classic Game Fest took over the Palmer Events Center last weekend. This two-day event was advertised as “The Biggest Retro Video Game Convention in Texas.” That seemed like a valid claim. It was big. Continue reading
Once again this summer, Bill and I are enjoying The Paramount Summer Classic Film Series. The historic Paramount Theatre on Congress Avenue has hosted classic films for 41 summers now and has recently upgraded their projection and sound equipment. Films are shown on most summer evenings, with some weekend matinees.
Bill and I celebrated another July 4th in downtown Austin with family and friends. The annual Austin Symphony concert started at 8:30 PM, followed by fireworks an hour later.

Formerly the site of a power plant, the build-out of the Seaholm District is nearly completed. The old power plant building was renovated last year and now houses offices for athenahealth and Umbel. Trader Joe’s Seaholm has been open for over a year now. People are filling up the condos at the 30-story Seaholm Residences.
Bill and I visited the 2nd Street Soundcheck on Saturday afternoon. This street fair was designed to entice customers to visit the 2nd Street District merchants and restaurants who, in turn, donated a percentage of their sales to the Austin Music Foundation and NPR music station, KUTX.
