The Texas Conference for Women
After a hiatus of several years, I decided to again attend The Texas Conference for Women. I felt the need to reflect on the past year, get re-motivated about my job, and take a continuing education day. Plus the event was nearby at the Austin Convention Center.
AIDS Walk Austin: 2013
A clear and sunny Sunday afternoon was perfect weather for a little stroll around downtown with AIDS Walk Austin. This annual event raises money for local non-profit AIDS Services of Austin (ASA) whose mission is “to enhance the health and well-being of the community and people with HIV and AIDS.” The walk began and ended at Republic Square Park.
Viva la Vida
The Mexic-Arte Museum joined with the City of Austin to sponsor the 30th annual Viva la Vida festival and parade. The purpose of this event was to share Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) traditions with the local community.
Oktoberfest: 2013
You didn’t have to be German to enjoy last weekend’s Oktoberfest at the German-Texan Heritage Society grounds on East 10th Street. There was plenty of entertainment for the entire family, ranging from music by Joe Klaus (and friends, above) to magic by Peter The Adequate to face/hand painting.
ACL Fest Day 3: 2013
Sunday was a picture-perfect day at ACL Fest. Temperatures barely reached 80 degrees due to the cold front that came through central Texas on Saturday. Except for a few muddy spots, the Zilker Park grass held up well after the overnight rains.
ACL Fest Day 2: 2013
After a hot, tiring Friday at ACL Fest, Saturday turned out to be a great day. Bill and I managed to get up close for several performances and especially enjoyed Portugal. The Man. and Greensky Bluegrass. The sun was hot, but there were plenty of clouds as a cold front blew through in the late afternoon. Temperatures dropped by 20 degrees over the evening hours, but the accompanying rain held off until after midnight.
Pecan Street Festival: Fall 2013
Hmmm…if it’s the last weekend in September, then it must be time for the Fall Pecan Street Festival! For the first time, I found myself there on both Saturday and Sunday. Neither day was particularly crowded; the threat of rain seemed to keep folks away this time. A storm did blow through late Saturday afternoon, but I was already inside eating dinner when the downpour started.
Austin Home & Garden Show
I didn’t hesitate when friends asked me to join them at the Austin Home & Garden Show on Sunday. While they were busy considering flooring options, I wandered around the Austin Convention Center, dreaming about my next project….
Austin Ice Cream Festival
In spite of this weekend’s cooler temperatures (yesterday’s high was only 96!), Saturday was a perfect day for the Austin Ice Cream Festival. Bill and I decided to offset those calories by walking the two miles from downtown to East Austin’s Fiesta Gardens. The northern path along the Hike-and-Bike Trail was mostly shaded, but we still arrived hot and sweaty, and were grateful to be greeted with our first ice cream sample right inside the festival entrance.
