Fun Fun Fun (UT Athletics Style)

Thanks to our generous season-ticket-holder friends, Bill and I attended three Longhorn sporting events at the University of Texas campus last weekend. All three were lots of fun. With such a big student body, UT has plenty of cheerleaders, dancers, mascots, and pep band members to keep fans entertained during the breaks. Plus I had my new Sony camera to play with…

On Friday evening, the UT Men’s Basketball team played their season opener against Mercer University at the Frank Erwin Center. This actually turned out to be a close game: the UT coaches were probably not happy when their team was trailing by 9 points with only ten minutes left to play. But the Longhorns came back and won the game 76-73. Texas lost most of their starters from last year, so this is expected to be a “rebuilding” year.

The UT Women’s Volleyball team played against Kansas for a full crowd at the Waller Gym on Saturday afternoon. UT won the National Championship last year, and hopes are high for a repeat this year. The Kansas women played well, but Texas won 3-1 to remain #1 in the rankings.DSC00101

Our last event of the weekend was Sunday afternoon’s UT Women’s Basketball season opener against UT-San Antonio (UTSA). Attendance at this game was about half of what it was for Friday evening’s men’s basketball. The UT women led the entire time and easily won 63-42. This game was never close, and at one point the Longhorns were ahead by 30 points. Bill and I found ourselves actually rooting for UTSA to hit a three-pointer, which they finally did in the middle of the second period.

Over this same weekend, Fun Fun Fun Festival was in full swing across the river from our apartment. The music started around mid-day and ended promptly at 10 PM per the city noise ordinance. But we had no complaints since we spent most of the weekend at the UT campus. And FFF provided another excuse to practice with the panoramic settings on my new camera…

  1. I’m thinking that camera of yours is working very well. Interested to see what you post after this busy weekend downtown. I’m so impressed how you participate in everything. Of course, that comes from a hermit. Ha!

  2. Yes, I am pretty happy with my new Sony camera. I dropped my older Canon earlier in the summer and tried to replace it with a less-functional model. I have now learned that you can never go backwards in camera functionality…and price, I’m afraid!
