For the fifth year in a row, the University of Texas Women’s Volleyball team has again reached the Final Four round. The women will play this evening against Nebraska in Columbus, Ohio. The game will be televised on ESPN at 8:30 PM CST. If they win tonight, the team will compete in the NCAA championship game on Saturday evening.
UT finished the regular season with a 26-4 record. Since the team was ranked #4, the NCAA First and Second Rounds as well as the NCAA Regionals were held here in Austin over the past two weekends.
Attendance hadn’t been the greatest during the regular season, but the hometown fans showed up in force for the playoffs. UT handily won their first two playoff matches against UT Rio Grande Valley and SMU. Their first Regionals match against BYU went to a nail-biting five sets, but UT pulled out a victory after being down by five points in the final set. They won their next match against Creighton in three sets.
We will miss seniors Chloe Collins, Nicole Dalton, and Pauline Prieto Cerame, who were honored at the final game of the regular season. Last year’s graduated star, Amy Neal, sat in front of us last weekend (that’s her head on the right side of my photo), reminding me that I feel sad at the end of every season. However, Coach Jerritt Elliott has recruited the number 1, 2 and 6 high school players in the country, so I think next year’s squad should be just fine.
In the meantime, let’s root for UT tonight: Hook ’em, Horns!!!
