It’s hard to fathom how many bands are in town for SXSW, and impossible to hear even a fraction of them. According to the SXSW website, this year features “over 2300 bands representing 57 foreign countries at over 100 venues.” That’s a lot of music.

SXSW Film continues through this weekend. Bill is still going to movies, so I accompanied him to this documentary about Mavis Staples. This movie follows her career with her family band, The Staple Singers, her solo work, and her collaborations with numerous musicians including Prince, Patty Griffin, and Jeff Tweedy. We heard that Mavis was at the movie’s premiere earlier in the week, but only the director, Jessica Edwards, attended this showing. She hinted that a distribution deal is in the works. Let’s hope so, because Mavis was my favorite film at SXSW.
