Last Friday Bill and I attended the opening reception for the 10th annual People’s Gallery at Austin City Hall. Over 100 works by local artists are displayed throughout the building. Visitors are encouraged to vote for their top three favorites, and at the end of the year, the city will purchase one of the top-recommended pieces for the permanent collection.
Last year’s People’s Choice winner was We Regret to Inform You… by Bethany Cobb, a white dress cleverly printed with rejection letters.
The opening reception included an unveiling of Death of a King by Corelius Carter. This painting depicts the final moments of Martin Luther King, Jr. and is prominently displayed in the lobby entrance.
The cute mini-cupcakes were only available at the opening reception, but hopefully this sampling from this year’s display will motivate my Austin readers to stop by City Hall and cast a ballot:
Hmmmmm.
I love that you can just wander in and look at all the art, going down hallways where people are working.
