For many years now, the City of Austin has been encouraging recycling for residents and businesses. Single-stream recycling makes compliance even easier since items do not need to be sorted first. Now even pedestrians can do their part in the downtown area, thanks to a new initiative called Recycling on the Go.
Street corners in our neighborhood now have two clearly-marked cans: “TRASH” and “RECYCLE.” The recycling can also has a helpful blue lid. Although the sign says “RECYCLE BOTTLES & CANS,” I’ve read that paper can also be put in the recycling can since this goes to single-stream recycling as well.
Locals are familiar with our recycling rules, so this should be easy for them. Hopefully visitors will figure this out, too.
(And yes…motorists, pedestrians, and a Segway tour group were staring as I was taking photos of garbage cans.)
