Under Construction: 2013

IMG_8883It’s time for another construction update…and there’s lots of news to report!

IMG_8866Site preparation has started for a new 30-story office building at the corner of Third and Colorado. This also seems to be the name of the building, Third and Colorado. A separate project is already underway on the same block: the old Spaghetti Warehouse (left in the photo above) has been gutted and a second floor is being added. This is rumored to become a Capital Grille restaurant.

IMG_8877Another new office complex, IBC Bank Plaza, is making progress. This site is next to the old post office (R.I.P.) between Fifth and Sixth Streets. This 13-story building will include the bank’s headquarters.

IMG_8882The new apartment building called 3eleven Bowie near Whole Foods is headed skyward as well. This 36-story tower will be wedged in between The Spring and The Monarch. A small strip of land on Fifth Street remains for the Tiniest Bar in Texas.

IMG_8886In a previous post, I had mentioned that dump trucks have been blocking a westbound lane on Cesar Chavez. Well, take a look at what’s happening behind the smokestacks at the old Seaholm Power Plant…work has definitely started on this site as well. Plans call for a 30-story apartment building plus retail space. This is the rumored site for the downtown Trader Joe’s.

IMG_8854The JW Marriot Hotel on Congress Avenue is getting higher too, moving up above the parking garage level now. This site has been in the news lately due to labor disputes. When completed, this will be the largest Marriott in the US.

IMG_8870And one sad, final note: the RunTex building is being dismantled. Bill and I had picked up many run packets at that location…so sorry to see the end of an era. Plus we miss the water jugs on the Hike-and-Bike Trail.
