The often-neglected low brass instruments took center stage at Monday’s Austin Tuba Christmas, held on the south steps of the Texas State Capitol. Over 100 tuba, euphoniums and sousaphone players played holiday songs in the hour-long concert.
This year’s event was organized and directed by Geno Gottschall, a music teacher at Lanier High School. All ages and abilities were invited to participate. The director noted that the youngest musicians were eleven-years-old.
Tuba Christmas concerts have been organized throughout the US and even overseas since 1974. This was Austin’s 39th annual event. What a nice start to the Christmas week!
