The 24th annual Feast of Sharing took place at the Palmer Events Center on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. As in previous years, this free dinner was organized by Texas grocery chain, H-E-B.
Last year I was a Server; this year I signed up as a Host/Hostess. Our team’s job was to greet guests at the door and to help them find empty seats. Several hundred were already in line when the doors opened, so the first 15 minutes were organized chaos as we escorted groups to various tables through the hall. After a brief flag ceremony and introductions, a hearty Thanksgiving meal was served to each person.
My Hostess job became easier after the initial onslaught. Diners continued to stream into the hall, but I learned to scout ahead for empty seats before returning to the doors to greet the next group. Based on many years of experience, H-E-B knows how to run an efficient operation: over 1000 volunteers served about 14,000 people in just four hours. For example, note the clever use of bread trays and shopping carts in the photos above.
Thanks, H-E-B, for caring and sharing!
